I use server based DHCP which has a "lease" option. A PC gets an IP for eight days and renews every four. Unless a PC is off the network for nine days it will keep it's original IP forever. I don't think DHCP given out by routers has this option. Might be worth a look to see if the ones you use have the option.
MS has a new "Home Server" server package. For home and very small office use. Might work for you in place of peer-to-peer. I'm sticking with Small Business Server for now. SBS 2008 should be out by June.
