Are you sure you want delimited files not CSV files?

For delimited file we would just surround whatever is in the field with the delimiter. If the delimiter were part of the data, we would not either know or care. This is very easy to implement. Much easier than CSV. You could do it yourself in your programs, and in fact I guess you do.

CSV is a "standard". If the data item contains a comma, we surround it with double quotes. If it then contains doubel quotes itself, we escape them by using 2 double quote charqacters within the field.

We would make the CSV files excel compatible with no training needed.

Either way would be OK with me, but Think CSV would be more usefull.

You could keep on doing what you do now with that pipe char if CSV doesn't fit.
