Can anyone point me in the direction of a document(s) to create an LDAP request at a low level?

I want to have the Comet Monitor make an LDAP request of my Active Directory Server to get rights information.

I need to know:

1. How do I know the User Log-In information in Windows?
2. How do I make the request of the LDAP server at the TCP/IP Windsock level?

I already understand the structure of the data that I get back, but I don't know yet how to get to the server.
