CutePDF, AFAIK, is basically a commercial version of PDFCreator. It's a package of tools that takes [whatever sort of document you feed it], turns that into PostScript, and then Postscript into PDF. Usually the heavy lifter in the scenario is GhostScript, an open source implementation of PostScript.
Adobe does things the Adobe way. Not sure about what's under pdfFactory's hood.
Anyway. The moral of the story is: if you repackage GhostScript ($0) with a nice front-end, you can sell it for $50 and compete with Adobe, who wants, what, $150? If you multiply that by licensed users, GhostScript starts looking pretty attractive.
