I new this logic worked because I've used it. I wrote a test program and I found that when this logic is executed from the background partition it works just fine. If however you do the pstat of the background partition that hasn't yet run a program from a foreground partition you get blanks as you're seeing. Does that sound like your situation?

I guess the buffer is initialized with blanks and will remain that way until the partition is actually used. If you want to determine if the partition is background, try looking as the "controlling terminal" info in pstat instead. It will be blank for background.
