If you use the Reporter (Part II)

The implementation of the INDENT command in the new Reporter is causing some confusion. This command, which dates back to the Q-days, works like this...

By default PRINT lines occurring before any USING are left-justified in the output. PRINT lines after a USING are indented 5 spaces for each USING command processed. In the case of a standard header / detail report this will get you a nice looking report with little effort. All the detail lines are nicely indented under the header.

If that's not exactly what you want, the INDENT command lets you override the automatic indentation. If used before the REPORT command INDENT applies to all PRINT commands in the report. If used after the REPORT command it applies only to the PRINT commands at the current USING level. The limitation of INDENT is that all PRINT lines within a particular USING level must always have the same indentation.

The DataExpress Editor allows you to set an indent value for your PRINT line, but because of how INDENT works you may not get what you expect. If you have more than one PRINT line at a USING level and try to assign a different indentation to each you'll see it uses the last value set in the level for all PRINT lines at that level.

I've talked to a couple of you who really did want different indentation for PRINT lines within a level. I'm thinking about adding a new command, INDENTLINE, that you could use immediately before any PRINT and it would apply only to that PRINT line. The functionality of the INDENT command would remain as is.

What do you think?
