I think it depends on what you're using, or how it's configured. If you use VMware Workstation (or Player), it uses a "disk image", which is probably slower than you'd expect.

If you use Server or above (ESX), or configure Workstation to use a whole disk/partition, it's direct access, just like the host OS, so the speed should be comparable.
