1978 - just finished IBM Structuerd Programming for Cobol at my last job before before becoming an independent contractor. Which, six months later, let to Q and now Comet. 30 years OMG!!!

COBOL had the most horific command. It would allow you to change the "statement-label". Don't remember the syntax. Something like CHANGE "THISPLACE" to "THATPLACE" So as the program executed a GOTO THISPLACE became a GOTO THATPLACE or if the programmer was really creative GOTO ATHIRDPLACE. Made debugging and reading the source very, very difficult.

In '80 or so the San Diego dealer brought in some software to review for a prospective customer. My first encouter with structured code in the Q world. the code was very pretty to look at. But, slow, slow slow :( Even the Wang emulator ran faster.

Yes, READ and POP should be avoided but they're in there. Unless I do a rewrite, I'm happy to tippy toe past these sleeping pit bulls.
