Ok, have more research results. DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) was born out of an idea called HMI (Human Machine Interface). Boy, does this sound fantastic! I personally have a HMI-Hammer, HMI-Mower, HMI-Shovel, etc. This was invented in Windows 2.0. At the time, *WORD/QUME/264 was prominent, not Windows 2.0. Some more buzz words, DDE Client/Server. This was used so MS Word and Excel could talk to each other (ooouuu, aaaaaa!!). DDE Client/Server was slow when pushed to it's limit. So along came FastDDE by Wonderware, AdvanceDDE by Rockwell Software and NetDDE (was considered revolutionary) to speed things up (circa 1995). And then ran into something called Software ToolBox that offers a variety of DDE Servers. Finally, it was summed up that technology has marched on. Integrating with DDE Servers is cumbersome. Instead of DDE need to look at ActiveX and OPC. That's another story...
