The big differences are inner joins -vs- outer joins. It makes more sense if you just skim the Wikipedia article and look at the example tables.
Inner joins show records only if the key field matches in both tables.
Outer joins show records from both tables, even if there's no matching field. Left & right are just modifiers to decide which table's records get included. (Include all records from table A, even if they don't match table B == left, include all records from table B even if they don't match table A == right.)
It seems Comet only does inner joins.
