We've managed to resolve this.

The problem may have been that we were changing the service logon for BOTH CometAsService and CometServices.

We revisited this -- left CometServices logon as LOCAL SYSTEM, but changed CometAsService logon's to the intended Active Directory domain user account.

After making these changes, all the Comet service(s) started without error. We were able to start a COMET session without error. And the previous problem (that started this whole mess) with FILECOPY functions to a network location seems to be corrected.
