Yes I can believe that CLEARCOMMON didn't work if your program either didn't have any COMMON or didn't have as much as QREPORTS does. When an overlay is run the data from the first program is overlayed into the data area of the second program. Therefore your LOCAL ended up in QREPORTS COMMON. You solved the problem the right way.

I don't understand your 2nd question. QREPORTS will attempt to run RPGEXIT. If that fails it runs CMONITOR. Only exception to this is if QREPORTS was ENTERED, it will simply do an EXIT.
