We didn't use UPS but we do use USPS (US Postal Services). We found this third party software (MailManager 2010 from BCC Software in Rochester NY) that performs address correction/validation and also Letter Carrier presort. This allows mail prepapration for mailing over 200 pieces to be pre-conditionned (sorted) and put in lettertainers (one foot or two feet containers) with sleeves and straps.
It also produces the CASS certification (address accuracy) and Postage Statements and Tray labels (barcoded).

I also wrote an in-house routine that validates States-Zip-City to make sure that entered data matches USPS master data file. I also have a HELP lookup for City Names and Street Names with address range.

I did not yet write a full address verificator for the US but I have one for Canada that works pretty good and I also have a Letter Carrier Pre-sort software which has just been re-certified for Canadian Admail.

For our US address correction, we use a batch process but the look-up is on-line within Comet. Have you got a few gigs to spare? The USPS "raw" files is about 7 gigabytes. Once Indexed in Comet they're quite bigger (over 14 gigs).
