Whilst I agree with all of you I don't want to maintain a separate file if I don't have to, I don't want to do a thousand dummy reads to get to the next code, the concept of multi-keyed files is great, I have been using them since their inception.
Just occassionally I have had the need for the secondary key to be truncated to the specified length of the key, thus saving Comet from adding whatever it adds to generate the multiple records per key. In fact, I don't have a problem with repeating information in the file numerous times to create my own unique keys so the file is in the sequence I want, I rarely, if ever, use the Comet sequencing feature.
But what is another file to maintain we have been doing it for 30 years.
