Yes they can continue to run whatever Comet they last purchased. You mentioned Comet 2007. It's odd that they're getting this message now. It is displayed during the weeks immediately surrounding the expiration date of the subscription. The 2008 subscription is about to expire. Are you sure they aren't on (or didn't at lesat buy) Comet 2008?
Regardless they should continue to run however they will not be entitled to any updates. Assuming it is a warning about Comet 2008 the warning messages will cease to display 2 weeks after the expiration date. If you want to email me the customer's name, I'll check their license and verify that what I am guessing is correct.
