Check to see if a record exists in a file

Does anyone know the best way to check to see if a record exists in a file? Attached is a file format description for a file, called N5. I need to do a query in this file to see if a record exists with certain criteria. I basically need to say, "Does a record exist in file N5 where Vendor = HVNBR$ and Check NBR = HCKNBR$ and Invoice NBR = HREFNBR$ and Check Date = myDateEntered".
