Here's how one of my customer progressed from Line printers to Lasers.
Printer = LP1,W ,N, ,\\SERVER\LP1_Epson:RAW,,; ! EPSON LINE PRINTER
Printer = LP2,W ,N, ,\\SERVER\LP2_QANTEL:RAW,FFCLOSE,; ! QANTEL(HP) SERIAL
Printer = LP3,W ,N, ,\\SERVER\LP3_4100N,,; ! HP HIGH SPEED
Printer = LP5,W ,N, ,\\SERVER\Xerox238,,; ! Mail Center Printer
:RAW means that no windows commands are sent to the printer. You can print your ESC program here.
FFCLOSE adds a FF at the end of each print job. Corrected a problem with QSPOOL (mostly) that allowed reports to bleed together.
When I took over the customer ...
LP1 was an Epson 5000 something. Greenbar printer where all the reports were printed.
LP2 was an old Qantel printer converted to serial, also a green bar printer
LP3 was their first laser where they printed invoice forms only. The invoice print programs relied on the font settings made at the printers control panel. Yuck :)
My changes ...
1)Using Font-0 at 17CPI as Default (all printers) they could print all the green bar reports to LP3.
2)Set up LP4 as the printer at each node. Users with lasers/inkjets in their office could now print reports at 17CPI
3)They added LP5 as a highspeed printer/copier/fax/scanner for all remaining greenbar reports
4)They has four different billing programs with different forms. We designed a standard form when Comet fills in the specific boilerplate, boxes etc.
So now LP1 and LP2 are unnecessary and sit off. LP3 is used for billing and as a spare when LP5 is down.
