I am currently using Vista Ultimate so my upgrade path is cheaper than coming from XP. By what I read, the vendor is Microsoft and it has to be purchased this month. I'll be calling my local hardware vendor after I post this. That's where I purchase all MS software. My understanding is that there is no direct conversion path from XP to 7. It must be a clean install and any software, shortcuts, etc will have to be re-installed from scratch. Don't think Office 97 will transfer to 7. XP compatibility mode? You'll need to purchase a beefy PC. Takes more resources. You'll have to test out all older software and drivers. Going from Vista to 7, everything gets transferred over. No need to re-install anything, crossing my fingers:). If you bought Vista and used the downgrade option to XP it might behoove you to upgrade from XP to Vista using the same DVD then to 7, even if you don't plan on installing it soon $100 is $100. Don't know this though. Any XP PC I have now stays XP. I loaded Vista from scratch back when it was a sin and paid for it in wasted time/effort. This time around should be smoother since MS got slapped upside the head. Good luck..
