Yet another way SPAM can wiggle it's way into your life. Those netbooks, laptop and even desk top's are pre-configured for wi-fi. Ever notice (under network connections) that 1395? It's wi-fi!! Had a client purchase a personal, new laptop and wanted help setting it up. Noticed it was set up for WORKGROUP. Clicked on 1395 and behold!! Joe's Pub network was there via wi-fi. Via this connection did a Symantec and Windows update. Was surprisingly fast. Dam, doesn't cost a dime to be connected to the internet. Just lucky to be around a HOT-SPOT. Now think families with newly purchased PC's with 1395. You can conceivably tap into your neighbors internet connection and have access to the internet on their dime. It's FREE!! You also, conceivably, have access to your neighbors data. If it's this easy, than the bad guys have a bonanza!! Have a business DOMAIN? You're probably safe. Keep WORKGROUP defaults out of the box?? Beware!! Want wi-fi? Read about WEP and change the WORKGROUP default. Also review INTERNET OPTIONS under Control panel. Check out the Security Tab and Zones. This is your defense. Ignore this!! Your problem. Wi-fi came into big play around 2003. Have a old experimental wi-fi access point that's still connected? Kill it!!
