I get it. If you set up variables like this, at the beginning of a series of reports, the values will be available for all subsequent reports. We could still use the "prompt" verb, but the syntax could be:

PROMPT %start% "082609"
...
SELECTING IF AR.DATE.SEQ GE %start%
