Still working on a final fix. But thanks to Jeff Cinelli, I have some additional information regarding Vista, Win7, and Server 2008.

Starting with Vista, Microsoft has introduced new capabilities to TCP to meet IPv6, RFC's, and the faster speeds we now enjoy on our LAN's and over the Internet. However, one of these, Auto-Tuning, has created problems. these still a lot of routers and switches that may not comply with the RFC and cause problems. A couple of these are slow program load speeds and interruptions in POP downloads from email servers. My customer is experiencing both. Jeff suggested I try the following from a command prompt.

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

you might want to do this first to see what the existing settings are

netsh interface tcp show global

Usually Auto-tuning is "normal". There are a couple of intermediate settings.

So, before trying this on my customers servers (Main and Comet). I did some Googling and tried the change on my office SBS 2008 server. My Vista workstations are set to "highlyrestricted".

I created a 950MB file to move around to make sure I could get a good speed check. Vista's copy dialog has a down arrow that expands and gives the thansfer rate. Nice :) Server to workstation was slow at 1MB/sec. I don't do many big file copies so I didn't realize I had a problem. Workstation to workstation was fast at 30-50Mb/sec.

I applied the change and voila server to workstation jumped to the fast speed. 30 second transfer instead of 14-15 minute transfer. One problem, for me the speed up doesn't last and after 30-60 minutes the transfer lapses back to slow. If I run the change again, the speed goes back up. I have a post to a Microsoft forum to see if there a fix.

My customer has standard Server 2008 and they're set to "normal". But his workstations are all XP SP3. I have another post into Microsoft to see what changes I might have to make the XP's to get Comet to load in 2-3 seconds instead of 25-30 seonds. All the delay is before COSC so the StartUp log hasn't been any help.

Let you know.
