I'll continue to post updates, but I'm gathering information that is pointing to the fact that the end-user actually went in and started deleting files due to disk space considerations. You're absolutely correct, new disaster recovery program would have been a lifesaver here as the operator in charge of swapping out backup tapes admitted she hadn't done so in, well, a long time.....
