Not a hardware pro but found the following after spending 4 days figuring it out at my expense. My Windows 2008 Raid-5 1.5 Tera drive refused to initialize. Thought I had a major hardware failure without a back-up since 12/25. Main goal was to get a backup!! My solution was to bypass Raid-5 cage and connect directly. Disconnected CD/DVD, Floppy cause I didn't have enough power plugs as bypassing Raid-5 cage required more power connections than I had. Managed to get it to work and thankfully got that backup. Upon further analysis came to this conclusion after consulting with my hardware vendor. At least for my Intel 3.2 Mhz, 4-gig mem motherboard leaving an external USB 1.5 TB drive turned on and connected interfered with my ADAPTEC Raid-5 Controller somehow and caused the failure. This was my path. FYI!!
