Thank you for your comments so far. I installed Windows ME before I got the warning about file handles. It has always worked for me for one session and sometimes more but usually falls over by the fourth session.
I have located a possible reason for my "dongle" problem. The target as specified in the icon properties is c:\comet98\cosw.exe /p3. The p3 probable refers to "port 3" which I have eliminated. But now that I have no access to Comet how do I fix it. At one stage you could use /D to go into demo mode to fix things like this. Is there currently a similar "back door".
