Barbara:

I think I've (*mostly*) sorted out my TWO separate problems with text files in non-configured directories

1) reading the text files.... it seems I have to do a dummy CREATE of the input file to get a record created in QDIR (or, even creating the QDIR in that folder) the part I was missing was to do this everytime, and then ignore the EXCP=12 when it's the 2nd time or greater. That way, the OPEN will work (before, I had the ACCESS followed by the OPEN, and the OPEN failed with an EXCP which I didn't know how to respond to

2) writing the text files... I do the ACCESS, ERASE, CREATE and OPEN

the only thing I have yet to test out is the DIR=DIR.NAME$ where DIR.NAME$="" has been previously set, so that I will let COMET find the directory... just as would happen if I omitted the DIR= parameter (this was your suggestion to another of my posts on this forum)

Thanx again for your help!

Bob "A"
