You can't disagree. Neither can you disagree with evolution. :-)
The simple fact is that a field is a number or a string, 5 bytes long or 6, has a fraction part or does not. But the editmask? That's for one report. You might not want the commas in another report, you might not want the pennies in a third report.
As for the notion of defining a field more than once? OHMYGOD! How them do you do a USEGEN? COBOL allowed for overlapping fields -- date often included month, day and year -- but I don't believe SQL tolerates that. Any SQL mavens on this board?
