I think you would be hard pressed to find a comprehensive solution that emcompasses databases with fast & efficient keyed structures, application development & execution ability, and external interfaces. Lets face it, the Comet operating environment & database system meets & in most cases exceeds our needs. I've come to recognize the benefit of utilizing external applications such as excel for some higher end analysis of data. Some of the things I would like to do would be time consuming & redundant to program in Comet, when they're already available in excel. However, I believe that as Keith points out, caution should be excercised when determining which external application we're going to rely on. I think Excel is going to be around for a while, and there are many things you can do with information in excel. But to rely on a $200 software package developed by a smaller company for a mission critical process is something that should be carefully analyzed before being implemented.
Department heads & others who don't embrace Comet perhaps are not properly educated in its capabilities, and security. I challenge you to find a level headed, intelligent, business minded professional who declares comet unsuitable in their environment. I've found its typically the more ignorant folks that make waves. So perpaps as IT folks we need to be sure we're doing our part to educate them, and point out just what a dumbass .... excuse me .... and point out where they may be challenged in their thinking.
