Trend AV problems

This refers to postings from last July-August about a customer who upgraded from Server 2000 to Server 2008, from Symantec to Trend AV, and changed their ISP for Internet access. They retained the old ISP's mail services while they decide on Exchange local, Exchange cloud, or Google Mail.

The two main symptoms, post upgrade, was that Comet.exe took 30 seconds from click to splash screen and that Outlook and Outlook Express would time out during message downloads from the email ISP.

None of the server tweaks to DNS, DHCP, firewall, etc by various gurus made any difference. We tried disabling and uninstalling Trend with no luck. We though we had eliminated Trend as the culprit.

Last week, the email ISP called and said the outgoing email had surged and that they feared an infected PC in the network. Trend had shown no virus activity alerts for any PC. The ISP shut off outgoing email while the local IT guy investigated. Since he didn't like the Trend AV, he decided to go back to Symantec. It took a couple of days to get the Symantec ordered and bring in a guru to do the install and rescan of all the network PC's. Very few malware problems were found but the "rogue" email stopped.

The big bonus. The Comet.exe and Outlook/Outlook Express problems have also vanished.
