BUT I programmed an NCR 315 with the CRAM machine.
What a horror. The mag card where held vertically by 8 tabs. You can picture, 8 tabs -- binary, send a signal for card 0100- 1000. Two or three dropped. Crunch!
The predecessor machine, the NCR 304 was all tape. Only unlike the IBM tape drives, these had NO inter-record gap. To get up the speed, the drive BACKED up the tape to get a running head start! Usually it worked. Usually.
Programmed the 304 in Assembler and the 315 in COBOL!
