This would save me a gzillion lines of code.

How about this...

string$ = currency1(num,err)
!!! 12345.12 would become $12,345.12
!!! 12345.12- would become $-12,345.12

- and -

string$ = currency2(num,err)
!!! 12345.12 would become $12,345.12
!!! 12345.12- would become ($12,345.12)


I would need something like this in Comet16 and Comet32.
