NCR salesman got me a site visit in about 1970.... was taken on a tour of the Machine Room and during a short stay there saw the operators periodically grab a rubber mallet and go over and slam it against the face of the CRAM unit
CRAM was the only data storage device that was at least as silly as the Data Cell...
Data cell was a cylinder filled with small pieces of magnetic tape... the thing would spin and then an arm would grab the appropriate piece of tape and slap it against a read head....
watching this was not for the faint of heart.....
