It's not really accurate to compare CA to ping. Ping sends and receives a ICMP packet which is connectionless, with no error recovery (it just tries again if the response doesn't come). CA uses TCP/IP in stream mode which includes sophisticated handshaking and error checking. The net result is yes, it takes a bit longer but we don't suffer data errors - only network errors. This level of reliability is mandated for CA.
