I tried to run a single compile with:

S ARATBT1.IBS,NXT
O ARATBT1,NXT
L T01,B,S,L,X
R MTB

to see what happened, I generated the object and then immediately re-ran the single compile.

it failed with the E34... when I manually deleted ARATBT1.LST,NXT the re-run worked just fine

seems to be something where there isn't anything to explicitly ERASE the file before creating it, or there's some kind of LOCK that doesn't get released.
