With PDF everything works close to 100% the way it did with QSPOOL. A caveat is margin handling. The PDF will pickup margins when it's created. The viewer (Adobe Reader) shows the PDF with those margins. When you print, the PDF gets shrunk slighly to fit the printable area of the printer. This makes the print look a bit smaller and the left margin a bit wider. This can be a good thing. Many customers have asked, after going to laser printers, to have the left margin widened so data isn't lost when the report is 3-hole punched.
It's the text to PDF that requires some PC work. Up to now, Comet has required Adobe Acrobat ($150+) or pdfFactory ($50) to do the rendering because they have "hooks" back to Comet. SSI has been working on another rendering engine from BullZip. Rumor has it that it will be included in Comet subscription. I'm waiting for the official details.
