does the CA client level have to match the COMET server level?

Is there any document that outlines the levels of CA client that will work with whatever level of COMET server is installed (much like the System Requirements table)?

If I upgrade from 2008 to 2011/2012 must I necessarily upgrade the remote CA clients to 2011/2012 before bringing them up?

Since I have IMAGE file rebuilds and many program changes (to accommodate non-IMAGE files) to do before upgrading the COMET server.... I'm trying to determine whatever "wiggle room" there is for this conversion, since there's no IT support in the branches, and the remote staffs are not available out of business hours.

one idea was to upgrade the remote CA clients now (before any program and file changes) and before any Comet Server changes, thereby eliminating something that has to be done "under the gun".

It's just that I didn't think that would work.
