line-drawing characters

I routinely find strings like @101010101010.....10@ in programs and they produce boxes and other line-drawing character pictures

I wanted to try that as part of a new program, but always keep finding documentation that all line-drawing characters are in the range above the 7-bit ASCII.... i.e. over 128

is there some translation table I'm missing?
