Based on Locis' reports of Comet running very slowly on XP nodes talking to NetWare servers, I called Keith to see if he could reproduce the problem. Interestingly, he just started noticing it yesterday! Here are the details of Keith's configuration which uses only type "S" directories:

- XP node running Novell client 4.9
- caching is turned off

- Win 2000 node running Novell client 4.83 SP1
- caching is off

The problem has happened twice. Both times he noticed it was after the machine had been sitting idly for a few hours. The Win 2000 machine does not seem to be effected. After powering down the XP and reloading the system, it returned to normal processing speed.

Recent changes on Keith's system:
- installed Novell client 4.9 on XP. Was previously on 4.83 SP1
- turned caching off
These changes were made on the same day

He's going to try turning the caching back on and let the machine sit for a few hours and see if the problem is still there. If the problem remains, the next thing would be to revert back to client 4.83 SP1 if he can.

The fact that Keith is seeing the problem with type "S" dirs shoots down Locis' theory that it is related only to type "N" installations. For now we'll focus on the client. Locis' customers with the problem are XP machines running Novell clients 4.83 SP2 and 4.9.

Keith and Bruce, please correct me if I got any of the details wrong. I will let everyone know the results of Keith's tests.

thanks for your help,
bb
