Thanks to both of you for the info. It's helping me get a handle on this.
It looks like an appropriate lines per inch calculation is simply 72/fontsize. So for 12 pitch Courier New font, the lines per inch is 6. I tested this for pitches from 1 to 30, and they all look good.
What I'm working on now is calculating the Courier New font size, based on the number of available twips across the page. So if a PDF printer has 12,240 twips available, and I have 110 characters I'd like to print, what font size do I need to use? This way my universal report generator can automatically calculate the appropriate font size.
