sorry to be so long getting back to you.

My Best Guess was that the configuration of the PDF archive when loading the PDF software is the culprit... turned out to be true.

I re-installed it, and noticed that the install process allows specifying an archive for recently created PDF files. this was where the file was specified... could be any kind of file... doesn't have to be in COMET.

so the PDF software was explicitly putting the "newly created" file in a file that wasn't accessable to COMET. then... it was put in the COMET PDF Archive... voila... 2 copies of the same file!
