I am running ESXi 5 VMware on my RI server and it sees the USB dongle natively. Our server in NYC is running a Comet server under Hyper-V and that configuration does require an external USB server. Not sure why you are looking for an external server under a VMWare environment. In VMWare you do have to set up a USB controller and assign a port to the dongle, but it finds the dongle and sets it up very smoothly.
