actually, I think I've narrowed it down.... further examination shows that the write dies on a record where:
everything to be edited has a value of zero
I didn't know this before because it seems that it was writing all but the last (all-zero) print line, and then when it died on the last record, it flushed the entire print file. when I put a MSGBOX after each write, it displayed the MSGBOX on all but the last
my further speculation is that it may have something to do with embedded blanks ... so that maybe if I squash out all intervening blanks, it may work. I just don't have time right now to try that.
