It's been years since I've tried to simply click on a .csv file and open it in Excel, since I can't abide the grief

what I do is:

Data
Get External Data
put in the name of the .csv file

then... declare the delimiter and get a parsed screen with column headings

for each of the column headings that will get "stepped on" I put "text"..... then my partnumber 982550E6 (a 50" TV" won't become 982550000000 :)

also... it's possible to take an undedited field with a date in it and specify "date" and then YMD so that an actual character string like 121108 (today) will get properly converted to 41221 (a Microsoft date number)

messy and hard to describe to users, but works like a charm
