turned out to be something fundamental in the printer itself.... the communications part where the printer tells the printer server that it's getting print lines and printing them..... eventually we got a number of hardware alarms generated on the printer itself... indicating it was in its final agonies....

So... I now have a newly refurbished printer near my desk and it prints nicely (for now, anyway)
