Which will send you to NIST.gov where you want to visit documents SP 800-66 and SP 800-111: http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/PubsSPs.html

For encryption, they recommend VPN and AES encryption. Look for FIPS-197 on FIPS at http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/PubsFIPS.html
