The old DOS calls are still in play. This is how we created or read files from outside C:\Comet and the QDIR structure.

At one of the dealer meetings in San Francisco. Circa 1996. We all received a copy of the "Comet Instant Reference Guide" and the "MS-DOS Programmer's Reference Version 6.0".

The introduction of TXT files as a Comet type came later and (CopyFile) much later.
