I'm leaning towards "Biting the bullet" (or should I say Byting the Bullet :) and re-sizing the keys rather than use the two-part key strategy.
however, I'm investigating the thought of putting the new widened key at the end for my biggest file, since I have to increase the size of two fields in this file (one of them the key).
Other than the obvious problem of confusing one and all (my self included, for sure), is there any consequence to having the extended file key anywhere else than it's rightful place in byte zero?
thanx
