I was studying Chemistry and we had a set of chemical data in a book which cost about $150 ... this was available as magnetic tape, but that was $1500 ... for comparison my annual tuition was $1900 and a subway token was $0.15
the problem was that the book was in French.... so... after searching high and lo I was outed as a French speaker who could translate the names of all the chemicals from French into English while key punching all the numerical data (as close as one could get to real time in 1967).... Of all the students at all campuses of Fordham University... there was one suitable candidate (or, perhaps victim)
Actually... all of you would recognise this data... when they say on CSI "run it thru the Mass Spec"... this was Mass Spectrometry data...
After this triumph, I was absorbed into a team building a "Confluent Beam Tandem Mass Spectrometer"... the only good thing I can say about those 3 years is that it is probably the reason that I went over to the IT side (such as it was, punched cards and all).......
