Comet to<->from Visual Studio C++

I have a Visual Studio C++ project that interfaces to an EFTPOS machine for transmission to a bank. I want to interface this to my POS system.
I need to send numeric variables for transaction amount, cash out amount or refund amount from Comet to the C++ app. and retrieve response codes from the app. to Comet.
I am a total novice as regards C++ and would appreciate any pointers as to where I should start looking for directions.
