My guess is that the mail server is no longer able to communicate with the sendmail program. This could be caused by an authentication scheme requiring EHLO instead of HELO, and login requirement.

We retired SENDMAIL for that reason.

Do you have a log you could send?

Most likely you should convert to emailptr.
