I copied your Font-4 = Courier New, 8, 13, 400 into my CosW.ini and ran this program:
close (1) &open (1) "lpp" ! Comet PDF
print (1)(SELECTSYSFONT=4)
print (1) "this is compressed print"
close (1)
I commented out the SELECTSYSFONT print and reran it and compared the output to the first run. The compressed print did work just fine in Comet32 when SELECTSYSFONT was set to 4.

Have you tried running the PTRFONT test program in DMW? It tests normal, compressed, and expanded fonts but it uses the system defined fonts 0, 1, and 2. Change line # 53 for your printer name.
